16-я конференция RASA. Круглый стол "Взгляд в будущее: наука и общественная трансформация". Ведущий: Александр Кабанов (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, нанотехнологии и фармацевтика) Участники дискуссии: Олег Ицхоки (Harvard University, экономика) Юлия Синеокая (Panthéon-Sorbonne University, Paris, философия) Константин Мальков (AI1 Technologies, прикладная математика) Вадим Гладышев (Harvard University, науки о жизни) Анна Крылова (University of Southern California, химия и адвокация науки) Игорь Ефимов (Northwestern University, биомедицинская инженерия) Prompts to discussion: — Erosion of Public Trust in Science: The spread of misinformation and disinformation—often amplified by social media—alongside internal shortcomings such as lack of transparency, overpromising, and limited engagement with societal concerns, has led to widespread misperceptions about science and scientists, undermining public confidence and support. To rebuild trust, the scientific community must critically examine its own practices and take active responsibility for restoring credibility and relevance. — Decline of Meritocracy: The growing intrusion of ideology and politics into the merit-based evaluation of scientific ideas undermines the integrity of academic competition. This trend reflects not only external pressures but also internal vulnerabilities within the scientific community, including weakened standards and institutional inertia. — AI as a Foundational Challenge for Science and Society: AI poses not only technological but also ethical and philosophical challenges. Its rapid deployment raises critical questions about scientific responsibility and societal impact. Tech leaders like Peter Thiel are advancing ideologies such as “dark enlightenment”, which call for anti-democratic restructuring. The scientific community must respond with a clear alternative rooted in transparency, democratic values, and public good. — Public-to-Private Funding Shift: A Cross-Disciplinary Risk: The pivot from public to private research funding endangers national technological leadership in STEMM, where massive infrastructure investments—rarely matched by private sources—are essential. In the humanities and social sciences, declining neutral government support risks turning education and enlightenment into arenas for competing private agendas. — Political Interference and Threats to Academic Freedom. In various contexts, scientists face censorship, surveillance, or political pressure—especially when working in sensitive areas such as vaccine development, climate science, or reproductive health. While in some countries this takes the form of overt repression, in others, policy agendas can subtly shape research priorities and public messaging. Such interference risks compromising scientific integrity and undermining national and global progress in these critical fields. — Governmental Restrictions on International Collaboration. Rising geopolitical tensions and increasingly restrictive policies are impeding cross-border scientific cooperation. These limitations obstruct the free exchange of ideas, talent, and resources, and often manifest as legal, political, or institutional barriers to open access to research data and findings. Such constraints slow scientific progress, reduce transparency, and undermine both national and global advancements in critical scientific domains. To address these challenges, solutions must be developed that balance national interests with the inherently global nature of scientific inquiry.
