Free Organ Concert Series: Isabelle Demers

We are delighted to welcome back world-renowned Canadian organist and Juilliard graduate Isabelle Demers for the second concert in the Auckland Town Hall Free Organ Concert Series. Regarded as one of the world’s great organists, Isabelle will be coming to Auckland from ‘Organ Celebration’ in London’s Royal Albert Hall, to delight audiences with a spellbinding programme, all played entirely from memory. The programme opens with J S Bach’s Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue in a dazzling arrangement by Max Reger, and one of the most demanding works in the repertoire. There’s also William’s Star Wars Medley, Stravinsky’s Firebird, and much more. Regularly invited to play at the basilique Notre-Dame de Montréal, Demer’s virtuosic piano techniques and repertoire played entirely from memory set her apart in the world of organists. About the organist Born in Lanchine, Quebec Isabelle began studying piano at the age of six. At the age of 11, she entered the Conservatoire de musique du Quebec a Montreal. She started studying organ at the age of 16, in private lessons with Yves Garand. During her stay at the Conservatory, she won many prizes, including second prize in the Montreal Symphony Orchestra competition in 2000. In 2003 a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts enabled her to study piano at the École Normale de Musique de Paris. After this, she decided to concentrate on the organ and in 2004 was accepted at the Juilliard School in New York. She currently serves as Professor of Organ at McGill University in Quebec.
