I was able to chase UP 4014, the Big Boy steam locomotive, quite a bit as it toured around Southern California in October of 2019. All 12 catches of it our included in this clip, as well as a handful of freight trains that showed up at the same time as 4014. CATCH 1: Just south of Las Vegas on UP's Cima Sub, 4014 approaches Jean, NV. CATCH 2: At Chase, CA, the first siding below Cima, CA, 4014 slowly descends the steep Cima Hill. CATCH 3: The next (VERY WINDY) day, 4014 approaches Daggett, CA and the BNSF mainline. The locomotive really seemed 'alive' here. Too bad the wind was about the worst I experienced for this train. CATCH 4: At the Natural Crossover at Frost, CA on BNSF's Cajon Sub, the 4014 passes over an eastbound UP manifest. It was fairly windy here as well. CATCH 5: Nearing Bench, CA, 4014 winds its way down the Palmdale Cutoff towards the bottom of the Cajon Pass grade. CATCH 6: After wye-ing, the 4014 backs through Pepper towards its resting spot for the next two days in UP's West Colton Yard. CATCH 7: Several days later, the 4014 pulls a much longer train up through Cajon Pass in the Blue Cut area. CATCH 8: Arriving in the greater Barstow area, the 4014 takes the Cajon Connector and meets a westbound BNSF manifest. CATCH 9: After wye-ing, the 4014 shoves its train past BNSF's Barstow Yard. The train is obscured by a westbound BNSF Z train stopped for a crew change. This is the worst shot of the steam train I got. CATCH 10: 4014 makes its long shove from the Barstow Amtrak station to Yermo to tie up for the night, and gets over-taken by a BNSF Z9. CATCH 11: On the last day I was with the 4014, it heads west into Daggett from Yermo. CATCH 12: Last but not least, UP 4014 heads over the Natural Crossover at Frost, this time viewed from atop the hill. A BNSF Z train heads east as well.
