Happy The Man (HTM) first got together in the 1980s. Instead of fucking off away from Seaham as soon as they could, the band decided to remain in the North East playing the club circuit while crafting the songs that they hoped would bring them fame and fortune. However, after repeatedly failing to get a record deal and get to number one in the hit parade, they decide to plough on in the dwindling club scene doing covers by proper bands. I filmed them near the end of their career at The Phoenix in Seaham, County Durham on Easter Sunday, 2008. They were quite literally not bad. The band split up at the end of 2010. The singer, Dave Curtis, is now a proud grandfather and has seemingly put his dreams of rock and roll stardom behind him. Meanwhile, HTM's keyboard player, Steven Weir, is now the toast of Seaham's vibrant coastal nightlife scene - think Peter Stringfellow meets On The Buses! The sleepy, turgid, uninspiring town of Seaham may never see their like again. And probably won't give a shite one way or the other. Oh, and The Phoenix is now a Tesco. That's progress for you.
