To be alive is to experience challenges that help us learn something about ourselves, and part of that experience is to learn to still appreciate our life and live positively even when it’s difficult to do so. When people tell us to “be more positive”, it’s not about feeling more positive because when we’re feeling negative it’s hard to immediately switch our emotions around. Being more positive is about making the conscious choice to perceive challenges as opportunities so that we can navigate through them in the most beneficial way. Challenges in life are so common and our emotions so fleeing that if we see happiness as the feeling of elation of pleasure, we’re going to spending the majority of our lives, feeling pretty miserable. Instead, when things don’t go the way we hope, we can understand although we may not feel happy, the appreciation we have for our life can still remain, and that in itself is a kind of joy. A great practice of a positive mindset is putting in positive actions even when the feeling of positivity is absent. It’s even more important to smile when we don’t feel like smiling because being sullen and angry only serves to bring us to a darker place. Some people might see this as fake, but there is nothing fake about choosing happiness. This is why happiness is a practice - we don’t practice something only when we feel like it, we practice because we want to be stronger and better. Practicing anything is not going to be easy, but it doesn’t mean we don’t try or we give up. We practice to build emotional resilience, so even when life is challenging, our happiness won’t be so easily affected. Everything is either a celebration or a lesson, and that’s why even when life is not easy, we can still be happy, always.
