Bats and White-Nose Syndrome

All of North America’s hibernating bats are at risk of developing white-nose syndrome a deadly threat affecting several bat species. In Canada, three bat species (Little Brown Bat, Long-Eared Bat and Tri-coloured Bat) in particular are facing rapid population declines as a result of the disease which is now present in several Parks Canada sites in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. If the disease continues to spread at its current rate, most of Canada’s hibernating bats could be infected within 12-18 years. Experts believe that without action, Canada could lose all of its cave-dwelling bats. Parks Canada is playing an important role in bat protection and conservation, including efforts to slow the spread of this disease.
