SOUNDBITE (English) Rafael Grossi, IAEA Director General: "On the left hand side is the normal levels, that you can have here in Vienna. You can see here what we were able to measure near the excavations. This is on the excavations inside these places. And as you can see this is three times or more lower – lower – than the authorised levels for workers." 3. Wide of news conference 4. SOUNDBITE (English) Rafael Grossi, IAEA Director General: "You remember, that when the Russians first came, there was an increase in the levels but always well within safe levels." 5. Wide of news conference 6. SOUNDBITE (English) Rafael Grossi, IAEA Director General: "I wouldn't recommend anybody to start excavating a place that it's known to have been subject to high doses of radiation. There is a risk there. But as you know this is probably a decision taken by a military or security force. I don't know under what kind of circumstances. I don't know with what kind of protective equipment. These are unknowns for us. But quite clearly it's not a place to have a picnic or excavate, No!" 7. Various of ending of news conference STORYLINE: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that radiation in Russian excavation sites surrounding the decommissioned Chernobyl nuclear plant was within safe levels. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said Thursday that radiation in the trenches was well below the maximum authorised levels for plant workers. He said that when Russian forces first occupied the plant there was a reported increase in radiation levels but always within safe parameters. His comments followed claims by the Ukrainian state power company that Russian troops received significant doses of radiation from digging trenches in the area during March. Grossi added that although current levels were safe, there was always a health risk from radiation in the area surrounding the old nuclear plant. He warned against anyone digging or "having a picnic" in the area. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
