Should Christians Watch TV? (How Shows Like Friends Have Ruined Our Culture) It’s nights like these that I can’t sleep... I can’t watch sitcoms like Friends these days without feeling frustrated and angry. Shows like these that glorify hookup culture, and make it seem like there’s no baggage associated with it. To Ross, Rachel, Chandler, Joey, Monica, and Phoebe, it’s the only way of life. They live with no sort of remorse, moving from one significant other to the next, far more concerned about satisfying themselves than their creator. It can be easy to fall into feeling jealous. These characters seem to get all of the intimacy and happiness they want, without even a second thought about commitment on the surface. But Friends is a classic case of the hamster wheel of life. Running and running after pleasure and success. Reach one checkpoint, and the next one looms. One thing stays consistent though. You keep on running after something... never satisfied. Solomon even tried it, he’s quoted as saying this in the Bible, “I said to myself, ‘Come now, I will test you with pleasure. So enjoy yourself.’ And behold, it too was futility." Ecclesiastes 2:1 The Bible tells us to, “Fret not yourself because of evildoers, and be not envious of the wicked, for the evil man has no future; the lamp of the wicked will be put out. Proverbs 24:19 & 20 This life is a drop in the bucket compared to what awaits us in eternity. My reward on earth will be far greater than the wicked’s reward. And for darn sure I’ll take my eternal reward over theirs any day... So should Christians Watch TV? Jesus Called us to deny our flesh, to pick up our cross and carry it daily. Shows like Friends normalize living for the flesh. They make fun of each other when they've gone too long without a hookup, and have influenced kids across generations to view the cast of characters as role models for desirable significant others. Something about the Jesus in me makes it so that I can't watch shows like this anymore, it makes my blood boil how much of an influence this show has on dating and relationships. Rant over.
