I recently took my Super Multi Coated Takumar 50mm 1.4 lens with me to Croatia while working on a new documentary project with friends in Split. It was the perfect chance to really put this old glass to the test with my Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k. With the Viltrox speed booster, that 50mm became a nice 70mm. This lens, made back in the early 70s by Asashi Optical (the company that became Pentax), has a 49mm filter thread and lets you get as close as 34 centimeters to your subject. The focus throw is a good 225 degrees, and it feels really solid in hand, weighing about 300 grams. When it's wide open at 1.4, the center is sharp, but the edges get a bit soft. Honestly, I think that's what makes it so visually interesting. The coating isn't the best at handling flare, and it does give a bit of a yellowish tint to the footage, which is easy enough to fix later. Chromatic aberration is definitely there, especially when shooting towards the sun – you'll see that violet fringing on the edges. The shallow depth of field at 1.4 is lovely, and while it's soft, it's not overly dreamy or ghost-like like some other vintage lenses I've tried. Even wide open, the image looks really good; the softness is totally usable and actually gives it this cool, old-film vibe. If you're into that classic look, I'd say this lens is a must-have. I definitely enjoyed using it and seeing the results!
