Response spectrum and pushover analysis are the most practical seismic analysis methods for most structures. Hence it is important to have a firm understanding of fundamental theoretical concepts such as structure stiffness matrices, modal shapes, and periods of vibration. We will provide a thorough review of these concepts as well as a demonstration of how they apply to the seismic design of a pre-stressed concrete bridge. ABOUT SPEAKER Ling Zhao, Ph.D Structural Engineer Michael Baker Jr. Inc., Hamilton, NJ EDUCATION Ph.D. (2004), Structural Engineering, University of Delaware, Newark, Delaware Master (2000), Structural Engineering, Tongji University, Shanghai, China Bachelor (1997), Structural Engineering, Tongji University, Shanghai, China EXPERIENCES New Jersey Department of Transportation, I-280/Route 21 Interchange Improvement New Jersey Department of Transportation, Route 52 Causeway Replacement Kentucky Transportation Cabinet: Milton-Madison Bridge OVERVIEW OF SEMINAR This presentation is about design steps involved for response spectrum analysis and seismic design per AASHTO Guide Specification for LRFD Seismic Bridge Design. The presentation will first introduce the structural dynamic principle, then discuss the bridge structural modeling techniques, moment curvature analysis, pushover analysis, the displacement-based seismic design concept, and capacity protection. The presentation will show some previous design examples. WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM THIS PRESENTATION? • Bridge Design engineers involved in Seismic Evaluation of Bridges as per AASHTO LRFD • Engineers interested in latest technique available for Seismic performance evaluation of Bridges • Those willing to learn the concepts of Seismic Design and Analysis for Conventional Bridges
