Stye is an infection of the meibomian glands, which are glands lining the eyelids and responsible for the formation of tear film. It is caused by germs, usually bacterial and it is associated with conditions like blepharitis, which is eyelid dandruff, sometimes with diabetes and other immune suppressed conditions that might be there. The symptoms are pain and swelling of the eyelid. It may be a localized, like a dana, like a gaath or sometimes it is all spread and the whole eyelid swells up. In the acute stages, It is treated with hot compress and antibiotics, and it usually subsides but if it becomes chronic and the pain goes away and you're left just with the gaath, this is called a chalazion, and this needs to be surgically removed. So how do we prevent it? Prevention is by maintaining eyelid hygiene and preventing dry eye disease. So symptoms like itching, watering, tiredness, burning of the eyes, they should not be ignored. These are symptoms of dry eye disease. You should get a dry eye evaluation and then appropriate treatment. Here in Synergy, we have all the equipment for evaluating dry eye disease, like the ocular surface analyser and then according to the findings, we do the treatment, which might be medical or we may need to do a procedure which is the LipiFlow.
