Dr. Vivek Sasindran, Consultant ENT, Head and Neck Surgeon Foreign bodies in the nose are a common occurrence, especially in children who may unknowingly insert objects during play. These objects can be animate (living) or inanimate (non-living), such as beads, chalk pieces, or paper. Parents might notice the disappearance of small toys, suspecting their child inserted it into the nose. In some cases, the foreign body may go unnoticed for weeks or months, leading to infection with foul-smelling nasal discharge. A medical examination can reveal the presence of an old foreign body. In rare instances, a foreign body might remain in the nose for years, accumulating calcium and magnesium, forming a rock-like structure known as Rhinolith, which can be detected through scans. Certain foreign bodies, like button cell batteries, are medical emergencies requiring immediate removal. While some objects near the nostrils are visible, those farther in may require sedation or anesthesia for safe removal. Early detection and prompt medical attention are crucial to avoid complications from foreign bodies in the nose.
