The end is sadly here.... After 23 years of loyal service, the last true intercity Amsterdam - Berlin; IC 140 has departed from The Netherlands, never to return... The service was already partially taken over by the ICEs and was already dubbed the ICE 140 regardless of the stock, but that being said; now the final classic locomotive pulled intercity 1 service has retired from international service. Starting back in 1991 after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the international service started as a D-train, before being upgraded to an Interregio service from 1994 to 2002. From 2002 onwards, the service officially was upgraded to an international intercity, serving for 23 years up until now. Presumably it's final upgrade is here, as the service will now continue as international ICE service, now filled in by ICE 3neo sets, but eventually to be replaced by the new Talgo ICE L sets, íf they can get approved for The Netherlands! Personally, I have a lot of fantastic memories with this specific train, especially in its former form still with the BordBistro and the Serie 1700 and Baureihe 101 locomotives. Many, many times I've travelled on the Intercity on my holidays to Berlin as wel as domestically being only one of two public trains with an on board restaurant. For those reasons I will always cherish this train.
