“Gardens of Sri Lanka & Influences on Contemporary Design” by Dr. Shanti Jayewardene The National trust seeks to honor Dr. Senake Bandaranayake, one of Sri Lanka’s most eminent archeologists, founder of the Post Graduate Institute of Archeology, and co-founder of the National Trust. Dr. Shanti Jayewardene, architectural historian and longtime friend of Dr. Senake, will present this oration on the year of his 11th death Anniversary. She will speak on Dr. Senake’s lesser-known contributions to architectural history which still endure in the design studios of contemporary architecture. Dr. Shanti will also introduce the recently launched coffee table book titled: ‘Gardens of Sri Lanka,’ co-written by Dr. Senake, Klaus Holzhausen, and herself. 20 years in the making and completed after Dr. Senake’s passing, the book seeks to bring Sri Lanka’s 2300-year garden and landscape design traditions to the world. Dr. Shanti Jayewardene has a Dip. Arch. and MSc. in the History of Modern Architecture from University College London, and a DPhil in Modern History, from the University of Oxford. Her research interests lie in the intersection of imperial and South Asian architectural historiography. Her published works include Imperial Conversations: Indo-Britons and the architecture of South India, Yoda Press, New Delhi, 2007 and Geoffrey Manning Bawa: Decolonizing Architecture, National Trust Sri Lanka, Colombo, 2017.
