In centuries past and up to 1940s and 1950s in the U.S., the treatment of mental illness was far less advanced and humane compared to modern practices. Institutionalization was the dominant approach, with patients often confined to large, overcrowded asylums. The focus was more on containment than treatment, and many patients were subjected to invasive procedures, which were really horrific. These procedures were based on outdated theories of how to "reset" the brain. These treatments were often dangerous and had limited success. The lack of effective medications and a poor understanding of mental illness resulted in widespread neglect and mistreatment of patients, who were often isolated and deprived of basic rights. The approach to mental illness during this period was deeply influenced by societal stigma, leading to the marginalization and institutionalization of those with mental health conditions. In contrast, modern mental health practices emphasize psychotherapy, medication, community-based care, and a commitment to treating patients with dignity and respect, while focusing on individualized care and recovery, and I can say as a patient, thank God things have changed and are changing in the right direction.
