Execution of Nazi Olympic Hero Who Left 13,000 Dead: Hans Woellke

Narrator: Marchand Steenkamp. About the story: Hans Woellke was born on 18 February 1911 in the town of Bischofsburg, then part of the German Empire. After Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany on 30 January 1933, he wasted no time in reshaping the nation’s future. His top priority was preparing Germany for war. One of his first major steps was rebuilding the military, which had been severely restricted by the Treaty of Versailles. By 1935, Hitler openly defied the treaty by reintroducing conscription and expanding the size of the army. At the same time, he established the Luftwaffe, Germany’s air force, and enlarged the navy, restoring Germany as a major military power. Yet even as Hitler accelerated rearmament, 1936 brought a very different stage for the Nazi regime: the Summer Olympic Games, held in Berlin. In Berlin, Woellke competed in the shot-put event and delivered a powerful series of throws. His best attempt reached 16.20 meters and secured him the gold medal. This Olympic win was the first German Olympic gold medal in men’s athletics. The moment was even captured in Leni Riefenstahl’s famous “Olympia” film, which further cemented Woellke’s place in Nazi Germany’s carefully crafted propaganda showcase. Woellke continued to compete after the Olympics. At the 1938 European Championships in Paris, he earned the bronze medal in shot put with a throw of 15.52 meters. Beyond his athletic career, Woellke was a member of Berlin Police Sports Club and trained under coach Wilhelm Landmesser. Standing at 1.78 meters tall and weighing 105 kilograms, he embodied the image of strength that the regime wanted to promote.
