Between 2021-2023, OceanGate took paying passengers on dives to view the famous wreck of the Titanic in their experimental submersible, Titan. On June 18th, 2023, tragedy struck when Titan imploded during a dive. Stockton Rush was piloting Titan at the time. Also inside the sub was Titanic expert, Paul-Henri Nargeolet, businessman Hamish Harding, businessman Shahzada Dawood, and his son, Suleman Dawood. Questions and concerns were raised about the sub, and Oceangate as a company, both before and after Titan imploded. Experts had warned against the use of carbon fiber, the material selected for Titan's pressure hull. A reluctance to adhere to industry standards also brought attention to the company, and to the CEO in paricular. A subsequent investigation into the tragedy found that many felt the culture at OceanGate was toxic, with the company having a high turnover of staff for its size, including dismissals, as well as resignations.
