In SHENANDOAH, TEXAS ACROSS THE RIVER and THE WAR LORD, Rosemary Forsyth married Doug McClure, partied with Dean Martin and Alain Delon and slept with Charlton Heston. All that in just her first few years in Hollywood! They were films, of course. Classics! The actress joined producer/host Rob Word to share fond memories of her first movie roles. Her very first was in 1965, a lead in SHENANDOAH starring James Stewart and, as her love interest, "The Virginian's" Doug McClure. She had numerous scenes with legendary Oscar winner and WWII hero, Stewart, who played her father in the film. Her character marries Confederate soldier Doug McClure and the actress still gets chills recalling the emotional scene that takes place during their wedding. SHENANDOAH was one of the highest-grossing films of the year. Featured in the film were an array of young leading men including Patrick Wayne, Glenn Corbett, Tim McIntire, Jim McMullen and Philip Alford. Plus another newcomer, Katherine Ross! Director Andy McLaglen stacked it with his regular stock company of players like George Kennedy, James Best, Denver Pyle, Paul Fix, Strother Martin, Dabbs Greer and Harry Carey, Jr., so it's no wonder that the film became the summer smash of 1965! Rosemary’s very next film, also 1965, cast her opposite another Oscar winner. Her leading man was Charlton Heston, whose title character, THE WAR LORD, claims his right to bed the newly married lass on her wedding night. Both films showcased the Canadian-born actresses’ stunning beauty and elegance in two very different characterizations. Rosemary won a Golden Globe nomination as “Most Promising Newcomer” for SHENANDOAH. Actors who make westerns are special. You've heard it before. "All My Friends Are Cowboys." Something about the character of movie cowboys gives most of them an honesty and kindness. It's an honorable trait and makes working together on location a joy. Or, as actress Rosemary Forsyth says, "They are really, really nice." She ought to know she's worked with many of the most popular performers in Hollywood. In SHENANDOAH she married Doug McClure, one of the nicest guys around and an honest-to-goodness horseman. When she worked with Doug again, it was on his series BARBARY COAST. His co-star? Another horseman, William Shatner. Her episode, "Jesse Who?" was directed by another nice guy, Bill Bixby, who'd made a few westerns himself. Hanging out with Dean Martin while shooting TEXAS ACROSS THE RIVER, was funny both on screen and off. Rose tells the story of ending up in Dean's trailer one night on location in a lonely canyon during a storm and opening the door to find out that the entire crew had unknowingly left them behind. Fun, though. Of course, Dean starred in several western classics and just wanted to WATCH B westerns during his down time! Before LONGMIRE, there was CADE'S COUNTY, a TV series with movie legend Glenn Ford as a modern day sheriff and his sidekick deputy, Edgar Buchanan. These western tall tales and more as Rose recalls working on a COLUMBO episode directed by this new kid "who looked like a teenager and was no more than two or three years younger" than her. It was Steven Spielberg! Have a nice time with Rosemary Forsyth in this episode of A WORD ON WESTERNS, recorded at The Autry Museum. #movies #classicmovie #hollywood #onlocation #williamshatner #actress #interview #deanmartin #jamesstewart #dougmcclure #shenandoah #civilwar #civilwarmovie #rosemaryforsyth #famouspeople #stevenspielberg #awordonwesterns #robword #interviews #filmhistory #western #tvwestern #actress #leadinglady #tvseries #columbo #leadingman
