Here's the first 15 minutes of WGN Channel 9's telecast of the Chicago Bulls vs. the Denver Nuggets, from the McNichols Sports Arena in Denver, CO. The main commentator was Bob Costas, with Johnny Kerr. Includes: "Last Farewell" animated station ID (voiceover by Jerry Golden) Opening titles, with voiceover (by Bob Costas) introducing game and reading participating advertisers' billlboard (for Schlitz Beer, Chevrolet and your Chicagoland Chevy dealers, Continental Airlines, and True Value Hardware). Bob opens the game and explains the situation for both teams (Denver's record is 2-8, tied for last with Utah Jazz in Midwest Division; Chicago whose earliest games in this season are primarily on the road, is 1-7 away, and 3-8 overall), before introducing Johnny who interviews Chicago shooter Reggie Theus (24) at courtside. After the interview is over, Bob mentions the Bulls' next 9 games will be home, before introducing the Bulls opening lineup: Dennis Awtrey (20), Center; David Greenwood (34) and Scott May (17), Forwards; Ricky Sobers (40) and Reggie Theus (24), Guards. With that, Bob announces the start of the presentation of the colors, followed by the National Anthem (sung - slightly out of tune, especially at the beginning - by the Sons of Italy choral group). That out of the way, the Denver starting lineup is announced: George McGinnis (30) and Anthony Roberts (21), Forwards; Dan Issel (44), Center; Bobby Wilkerson (32) and David Thompson (33), Guards. (Wilkerson is starting in place of Charlie Scott [11] who'd had a bad back and is part of the lineup but not starting.) Added to Denver's roster are Kim Hughes (35), while Bo Ellis (31) is waived; on the Chicago side, John Mingelt (35) who'd missed all of the first part of the season with an injured back will be on the active roster while Roger Brown (55) is placed on injured list with strained Achilles tendon. The Chicago players arrive on the court, in order: Del Beshore (1), Sam Smith (28), John Mengelt (15), Coby Dietrick (26), Ollie Johnson (27), Mark Landsberger (54), Dennis Awtrey (20), Ricky Sobers (40), Reggie Theus (24), Scott May (17), and David Greenwood (34), followed by Bulls head coach Jerry Sloan. On the Denver side, trotting out are Bobby Wilkerson (32), Anthony Roberts (21), George McGinnis (30), Dan Issel (44) and David Thompson (33), followed by Nuggets head coach Donnie Walsh. Meanwhile, as the players from each side appear, Bob gives stats on other teams in the NBA and the Midwest Division. He then announces the referees for the game, Wally Rooney and Jim Capers. With the introductions out of the way, the players get into position to start play for the 1st quarter - and can't score to save their life - until about 2:40 into the proceedings (13:50 into this clip), Bulls' Theus finally shoots a basket (Chicago leads 2-0), followed by Issel scoring (2-2 tie) at 2:55 in the quarter, with over 9 minutes left. Then Greenwood scores (4-2 Chicago) followed by Wilkerson (4-4 tie). May then scores for a 6-4 Chicago lead, with Denver about to make their move when the tape runs out. , (40 year-old SPOILER ALERT: Final score: Nuggets 113, Bulls 99.) This aired on local Chicago TV on Friday, November 2nd 1979 during the 8:30pm to 8:45pm timeframe. This was from a tape donated to The Museum of Classic Chicago Television as part of The Mike and Britta Fayette Collection. About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television: The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes.
