Driving Mexico's Scariest Highway: La Rumorosa!

La Rumorosa is the famous mountain road that crosses the Sierra de Juárez Mountains in Baja California. The spectacular highway connects Tecate and Mexicali that are 81 miles (130km) away. The highway lies at an elevation of 4,042 ft (1.232 m) above the sea level. La Rumorosa means "The Whisperer" and owes its name to the wind that blows through the rock formations of Sierra de Juarez causing whispering sound. Initially, the highway was constructed in 1917 under the governorship of Esteban Cantu. Before that, land travel between Tijuana and the rest of Mexico required travel through the United States. It was a two lane road with barely enough space for 2 trucks to pass each other. The wind in the mountains and the steep grade of the highway made things worse. Some reckless drivers tried to finish this stretch of highway faster, causing numerous accidents. Today the road is double-laned on both sides, one upstream and the other downstream. The highway has improved markings and consequently, a significant reduction of accidents. However, even with security measures, the road is still considered one of the most dangerous for inexperienced drivers. Driving during winter months may be dangerous due to freezing temperatures, snow and black ice. The highway has often been described as Mexico's most dangerous road, and even one of the worst in the world. The road is said to be haunted and the ghosts of the victims are said to haunt the drivers. These claims are backed up by mass media, that not only talk about the treacherous nature of the road but also the reputation the area has for supernatural phenomena. Exaggerated claims of the number of fatalities further fuel the mythology.
