Alberto Madonna Senior Software Engineer, ETH Zurich/CSCS CSCS has been at the forefront of advancing container technologies for HPC, most notably with the development of the open-source Sarus container engine. Over the years, the container ecosystem has evolved significantly, enabling the broader user community to design increasingly sophisticated workflows. This rapid evolution introduces both opportunities and challenges. In response to these dynamics and aligning with the open-source container community’s emphasis on simplifying workflows and reducing complexity, CSCS has introduced the concept of ""containers as first-class objects"", alongside a first implementation within its cutting-edge Alps infrastructure. This presentation will explore the latest advancements in container software and architecture from CSCS. Sarus is transforming into a modular suite of tools designed to leverage broader compatibility with community tools and industry standards. A major focus is on seamlessly integrating Podman as the core engine of a container-centric HPC system. The modular components of Sarus will be open-sourced, designed to be used either individually or in any combination, offering flexibility and adaptability for enhancing container solutions that adhere to community standards."
