He went to Erfurt to study at the “Gymnasium” there, and when he had finished his studies, he became organist at the Lutheran “Regler” church, and also taught at the school there. His organ teacher was one of the best musicians of the day: Johann Pachelbel, who was organist at another church in Erfurt. (Pachelbel was one of the composers who influenced Johann Sebastian Bach in his youth, as he was the teacher of the great Bach’s older brother Johann Christoph.) In 1687, Buttstedt married Martha Lämmerhirt, a cousin of J.S. Bach. In 1691, he was appointed organist at the court in Rudolstadt, a position he held for the rest of his life, and also worked at a Catholic church (as an organist) in Erfurt. Though Buttstedt was a master composer whose music deserves to be heard today, he is mostly known for an intellectual dispute he had with the more famous Johann Mattheson. Mattheson was a proponent of newer styles in music, whereas Buttstedt, the more conservative of the two, opined that the “traditional ways” should be upheld. Sadly, very little of his music has survived; he himself wrote that he had composed about one thousand keyboard works, yet all that remains is a handful, mostly for organ. Nonetheless, this fine suite for harpsichord shows that Buttstedt, like Bach, composed for different keyboard instruments (organ, harpsichord and clavichord).
