EXPLORING MADERIA Fajã dos Padres in a cable car ride

Join me in this short video as we explore Fajã dos Padres, located on the south coast of Madeira in Campanário, Ribeira Brava and approximately 11km or 16 minutes from Funchal. The meaning behind the name – The name comes from 'Fajã' (Portuguese for a landfall at the base of a cliff forming a beach-like landing) and 'Padres', which means priests, as the area once belonged to priests of the Society of Jesus. Access to the Fajã is via the cable car Teleférico Faja dos Padres, and with a journey time of approximately two and half minutes – a decent of 300m, allows plenty of time to take in the stunning views of Fajã dos Padres as well as the surrounding coastline as far as Ponta do Sol. Upon arrival, we make our way to the beach along the paved walkway through the banana fields to both our left and right. The Fajã also benefits from its own microclimate and coupled with the rich, fertile land, enables the growing of other fruits such as mangos, avocado’s as well as a wide range of exotic fruits such as pineapples, passion fruit, papaya and figs to name but a few. In addition, the area also provides excellent growing conditions for vineyards and in this instance the Malvasia or Malmsey white grape is grown here and used to produce fortified wine, the most famous being that produced by Blandy’s. Some of these vines can be seen as we make our way to the beach as we exit the banana fields. Finally, we arrive at our destination – Praia da Fajã dos Padres, which is an unguarded beach. We’re now standing on the pier as we look along back towards the restaurant and the beach itself, taking in the breath-taking views of this wonderful location.
