Had a question from a viewer about driving a tractor on a public road. In last week's video I discussed getting a tractor physically ready to "road". Today I'm going to discuss two things you need to do to protect yourself before you embark on a tractor road trip. First, you need to check the laws in your state. Where I live, the laws for slow moving vehicles are on the highway patrol website. It's just two pages of common sense (and common courtesy) rules for driving your tractor on public highways. The only thing I didn't know was the very first rule, that you need to have a pole with a red flag about 12-14' in the air above your tractor so motorists can see you when going around curves or up and down hills. That makes sense. Check all of the regulations before you start out driving, there may be restrictions in there about when you can drive and best practices to keep you safe and protected from a liability standpoint. Which is related to the next thing you need to know before leaving, and that involves insurance. Before taking your tractor out on the road make sure your insurance policy covers you when doing so. The coverage for tractor driving will likely come from your homeowner's policy and not your policy for auto insurance. If you have a true "farm" policy, it's probably in there. Many farmers have fields to work that are not adjacent and they take their tractors and equipment out on the open road in harvest and planting season. If you're like me, more of a "hobby farmer", then you may not be covered. I had to add a special policy to cover me which costs about $250 a year to be covered on the road with my tractor, which is important, because I'm on our road traveling between properties several times a year. It's really important to have coverage and I know that because I was contacted a couple of years ago by an attorney who wanted me to be an "expert" witness in a civil suit between a semi-truck driver's insurance company and a farmer who had taken a tractor on an interstate highway. The truck hit him and then everything got tied up in litigation. I declined, but it brought home the need to be covered when taking a tractor or other equipment out on the open road. Once those two hurdles are cleared, buckle up your seat belt, turn on your flashers, disengage 4 wheel drive, make sure you have an SMV triangle mounted, and open the tractor up and start driving. Be sure to let cars pass when they get behind you. By the way, it won't hurt the tractor to shift into road gear and crank the throttle up to the wide open position. Once you get on the road, you want to get where you're going as soon as you can. Stay safe! LINKS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT... The Tractor Fun Store: https://asktractormike.com/products-f...
