Tendon xanthomas are deposits of cholesterol-rich material in tendons, often associated with high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in the blood. They are a characteristic feature of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), a genetic disorder that affects cholesterol metabolism. Appearance: Firm, painless nodules or swellings in tendons Typically found in: Achilles tendon Patellar tendon Tendons of hands and feet May be yellowish in color due to cholesterol deposits Causes: Elevated LDL cholesterol levels Genetic mutations in LDL receptor gene (FH) Other rare genetic disorders affecting lipid metabolism Significance: Indicator of underlying lipid disorder May be associated with premature cardiovascular disease Can be used as a diagnostic criterion for FH Treatment: Lipid-lowering medications (statins, etc.) Lifestyle modifications (diet, exercise, etc.) In some cases, surgical removal of xanthomas may be necessary Note: Tendon xanthomas are different from xanthomas that occur in skin, which are more common and often associated with other conditions. #TendonXanthoma
