He never had children, but he adored children and was often seen entertaining the little ones with fantastic stories and fairy tales. This work, Ma mère l'Oye, was written as a gift for the children of his dearest friends, the Godebskis. When little Mimi Godebski grew up, she remembered this time fondly: "Among all my parents' friends, I had a fondness for Ravel because he told me stories that I loved. I would climb onto his lap, and tirelessly he would say, 'Once upon a time...' The piece has five short movements, each based on a fairy tale: 1.
