Teach Your Dog the "Paws Up" Trick

Day 5 Dog Training Challenge: Paws Up (Trainer Julia) Let's get your dogs really moving today! We're going to be teaching them to put their front paws up on an object. For some dogs, they'll find this challenge immediately fun and easy. For those dogs, we are going to lure this behavior at first, but we want you really focusing on weaning off the lure as your dog progresses. That means once you're adding in your cue word, you'll cue, PAUSE! Really, really pause here! and then only offer a hand signal if your dog is really stuck. Get comfortable with that uncomfortable pause - it makes the difference between a dog that thinks for himself and a dog that constantly needs your guidance. But what if your dog doesn't want to put even one paw on the object? Here's where I want you thinking like a dog trainer. What is the CLOSEST behavior to what you ULTIMATELY want that your dog can do RIGHT NOW? I bet they can look at the object. Mark and reward that. Pause. Wait for them to do it again. Can your dog sniff the object? Mark and reward that. Wait for them to do it again. This process is called shaping, and it's rewarding tiny pieces of the finished behavior you want, until your dog figures it out. You can also lure and reward pieces of that finished behavior - mark reward if they lift one paw up, touch one paw to the object, hold one paw on the object, etc. For nervous or insecure dogs, this is an excellent challenge to build their confidence. It's also great for socializing puppies to new surfaces. PRO TIP: When luring at first, do it slowly. Keep that food right at your dog's mouth and bring them gradually towards the object. If you go too fast, your dog will sit there and stare at you :) Level Up: Pivot You might find this level up to be one of the most difficult, and/or the most fun of all of them! We are going to walk you through how to make your dog a bit more aware of their hind end. If you enjoyed the shaping option I mentioned above, you're going to love this! If you didn't...well...😆 Julia will guide you through the steps, but you're essentially going to be patiently waiting for your dog to make any movement from their hind end, with little guidance from you. You will be tempted to move yourself around the object to try to move your dog, but this really is about letting your dog take the reins here! While it may start out slow, your dog will be moving around that object in no time!
