The electric multiple units ET30 were typical late 1950s / early 1960s design (following the popular VT08 design); with the introduction of the ET420 the Rhein-Ruhr commuter trains had the own colour livery (light orange + light greywhite); as the passenger / commuter numbers grew the ET420 were followed by push-pull S-Bahn units also in Rhein-Ruhr livery usually hauled by a class 111. During the early 1990s both, ET420 and above push-pull trains were replaced by push-pull Dosto (Doppelstock = bi-level) units
