(22 Oct 2014) A spokesman for the peshmerga said on Wednesday that the Kurdish Regional Government will deploy its forces to join Syrian Kurds in the fight against Islamic State militants in Kobani. Speaking in Irbil, Halgurd Hekmat said there was little clarity about the soldiers' deployment and uncertainty remained over how many troops will be sent. "We're sending the peshmerga, not to become YPG (Kurdish People's Protection Units) but to fight alongside the YPG," he said. On Wednesday, the Kurdish parliament of Iraq held a meeting to discuss a vote for the deployment of Kurdish forces to Syria.
