Potable water is water that is safe to drink and free from harmful levels of chemical, biological or physical contaminants that could cause illness or infection. In the context of emergency safety showers and eye/face wash stations, only potable CAT1 water meets the quality required by international standards such as ANSI Z358.1 and EN15154 for direct contact with skin and eyes. These standards also specify that safety shower and eyewash equipment must deliver potable, tepid water to ensure effective, safe decontamination following chemical exposure. Contaminated or non‑potable water can introduce pathogens and toxic substances into already damaged tissue. Instead of aiding decontamination, lower fluid categories can increase the risk of infection, allergic reactions, further chemical burns or life-threatening illness when used to flush chemical burns. For this reason, safety equipment for chemical handling areas, laboratories and industrial sites must be supplied with potable CAT1 water at tepid temperatures, typically between 16–38°C, to enable a full 15‑minute flush without causing thermal shock or discouraging the casualty from remaining under the flow.
