On 22 September 2024, Dom and I were invited by my brother Philip to see his band, the Helen Flaherty Trio, perform at KIKH FOLK 2024, held at the Kapel O.-L.-Vrouw van de Heuvels in Kapellen, Belgium. The trio featured Helen Flaherty on vocals and bodhrán, Philip Masure on guitar and cittern, Sjard de Jong on fiddle, cittern, and vocals, and special guest Aongus McGalligan on Irish uilleann pipes and bodhrán. Helen Flaherty is a Scottish singer and bodhrán player based in Antwerp, whose repertoire blends traditional and contemporary compositions in the Celtic folk tradition, with a focus on Irish and Scottish songs. In her ensemble, she collaborates with musicians on fiddle, flute, cittern, guitar, and bodhrán, delivering multi-vocal performances with arrangements that interweave melody and harmony. Helen has also recorded a solo CD, Oft Times I’ve Been Cheery, featuring collaborations with folk musicians including Daithi Rua, Sylvain Barou, and Aidan Burke. She is involved in other folk projects and has performed with artists such as Philip Masure and in groups like Shantalla. At KIKH FOLK, the ensemble performed a programme of Irish and Scottish music, blending traditional and contemporary songs with multi-instrumental arrangements and harmonies characteristic of Celtic folk. #celticfolk #helenflaherty #philipmasure #sjarddejong #aongusmcgalligan
