A humpback mother and her calf off the coast of Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula. A baby breach. And the unmistakable sound of whales singing beneath us. This unforgettable encounter took place near Caño Island, just offshore from Corcovado National Park, one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth. For nearly two hours, we found ourselves alone with a humpback mother protecting her calf while sub-adult males circled nearby. Then the calf breached. Moments later, our guide lowered a hydrophone into the water and we heard them singing. Their voices echoed through the boat, raw and resonant. There was no rush. No competing engines. Just presence. Encounters like this are why we believe in small group, conservation-rooted travel. When you slow down in a place like the Osa Peninsula, the wild reveals itself differently. More intimately. More honestly. This footage was captured during a TerraFauna Journeys small group experience in Costa Rica, where each journey is limited to 12 guests and intentionally designed to support local communities and marine conservation efforts. If this moment moved you, consider what it might feel like to witness it in person. Learn more about our Costa Rica small group journey: https://www.terrafaunajourneys.com/sm...
