Naperville Coyote Sightings on the Rise

As the temperatures drop, coyote sightings often go up. That’s because during this time of year, younger coyotes are going off on their own and exploring new areas. But, that’s not the only reason coyote reports are on the rise. “As we progress further into winter, as trees and shrubs start losing their leaves, a lot of the vegetation gets matted down, particularly too if we get snowfall, then the coyotes start becoming more obvious too. And so I think it’s multiple facets. Yes, there are a few more coyotes right now, but it’s easier to spot them too as the vegetation gets thinner,” said Dan Thompson, Ecologist with the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. If you see a coyote, especially near your home, Thompson recommends standing your ground so they know they’re not welcome in that area. Generally, coyotes aren’t a threat to humans and tend to be skittish. And an increase in coyote activity means dogs should be kept on a leash at all times to avoid any unwanted altercations. Coyotes are necessary for the local ecosystem because they help maintain checks and balances. Naperville News 17’s Evan Summers reports.
