What is the Triodion? | Elder Nektarios Moulatsiotis

Where does its name come from, and what do we mean when we say "the Triodion has opened" in Greek? When does the Triodion begin and when does it end? What is its significance in the life of the Church? What has the Church established to take place during the Triodion? Who is commemorated during the Triodion? What is the relationship between the Triodion and the carnival? How should we, as Christians, live during the period of the Triodion? During this time, spiritual life becomes more intense and takes center stage in a person’s life, with fewer worldly distractions. During the Triodion, a person sets aside celebrations, carnival festivities, excessive entertainment, television, and all things that divert them from this sacred period, which prepares them to truly experience Easter. The period of the Triodion helps a person experience their own resurrection alongside the Resurrection of Christ. It is a period of tears—not of sorrow, because a Christian is always joyful—but of repentance and contrition for the sins we all carry. It is a time of introspection, with more frequent and profound church services, increased prayer, greater spiritual and physical discipline, and intensified effort and struggle to recognize and correct our sins.
