Why a February interest rate cut is likely | The Business | ABC News

The chances of an interest rate cut in February have increased, with official figures showing the Reserve Bank's preferred measure of inflation fell to 3.2 per cent over the year to December. The trimmed mean, a measure of underlying inflation, slowed to 0.5 per cent in the quarter — below economists' forecasts of a 0.6 per cent rise. In the wake of the release, financial markets were pricing in a more than 90 per cent chance of the RBA lowering interest rates in February, while the Australian dollar lost ground. Treasuer Jim Chalmers said, "the worst of the inflation challenge is now well and truly behind us". But the Shadow Finance Minister Jane Hume says "the mission is not accomplished and ... interest rates have stayed too high for too long". Rhiana Whitson reports. Kirsten Aiken also spoke to NAB's chief economist, Alan Oster, who says, a rate cut in February is not as clear cut as financial markets believe. #ABCBusiness Subscribe: http://ab.co/1svxLVE ABC News provides around the clock coverage of news events as they break in Australia and abroad.
