WPS issue sparks heated clash between Marcoleta, Pangilinan

"I AM NOT DEFENDING CHINA" The Senate witnessed a heated exchange between Senators Rodante Marcoleta and Kiko Pangilinan on a resolution condemning the Chinese Embassy’s criticism of Philippine officials. Marcoleta questioned why the resolution singled out China, noting that other claimant countries in the West Philippine Sea also have disputes with China but do not confront the Philippines aggressively. He also criticized Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson for the WPS Commo. Jay Tarriela for making 'boombastic' statements, saying they seem aimed at self-promotion rather than national interest. For his part, Pangilinan countered that China’s actions, such as using water cannons and attacking Philippine vessels, set it apart. Pangilinan also stressed that Tarriela has the support of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Department of National Defense (DND), urging the Senate to back personnel risking their lives to defend the West Philippine Sea.
