Former US Labor Secretary Professor Robert Reich joins Peston in this interview to discuss the motivations behind the escalating conflict in Iran and its potential to destabilise the global economy. Reich suggests that Trump is under ‘increasing pressure to put an end to the war’ in Iran, as global oil and gas prices rise and the stock market goes down. Given that (predictable) economic and political backlash he argues that President Trump’s decision to go to war in the first place may have been to distract people from the Epstein files and a failing economy. Asked about the Epstein scandal which is seeing some in the U.K. face consequences like Peter Mandelson and Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, he suggests that the lack of ‘accountability’ for those in the US who are implicated in the Epstein files is because the US Justice Department is no longer ‘independent’. Looking ahead to the US elections and the future of American democracy, Reich reflects on the systemic challenges facing the nation, from the stagnation of job growth to the influence of big money in politics. He suggests that like he sets out in his book ‘Coming Up Short’ his generation have left democracy in a messed up state even if we must still have hope it can be fixed in the future.
