Dunlop / MXR Echoplex EP103 After getting somewhat of a bad wrap in a couple of threads on The Gear Page; my expectations for this pedal were not high. However, in my opinion it does a very good job of copping the original EP-3 vibe in a standard sized enclosure running at 9v (Upped to 20v internally according to Dunlop.) The pedal comes with a power supply included, which is a nice touch, although with the tap tempo factored in (which is required to access the Dunlop equivalent of ‘sound-on-sound’ mode), this pedal comes very close to the price of a new El Capistan, at which point most of the bigger digital boxes from other manufacturers come with a power supply as well. In terms of sound, the EP103 has nicely voiced repeats with a nice slow decay taper, that can be carefully balanced to sustain indefinitely without self-oscillating, although it is much harder to get the right spot than with an El Cap with the bias set full CW. The eq on the repeats is not over the top, and gets darker as the age knob is increased. There is a slight flangey / chorusey modulation on the repeats even with the age function ‘off’, which may bother some users. Things I like: The pedal utilises a sampling rate of 96kHz Power supply included Simple three-knob functionality, with ‘set-and-forget’ age mode. Dunlop own the Echoplex trademark, hence they were able to use the original graphics. Can be set fully wet and stereo I/O; for use as a hardware insert i.e. applying tape simulation to a mix. Tape age adjustment is nicely voiced Things I don’t like: Repeats are slightly modulated even with ‘age’ off. Adjusting age adjusts repeats volume simultaneously. (Not a big deal if you set and forget, knob would play catchup when you exit age adjustment anyway.) Gets warm when on. Kinda weird in a pedal although I have noticed the same with my Strymon Deco… Maybe it’s all for that extra tape warmth.. ;) Manual: https://vidweb.aws.marketlive.com/jim...\ My other ‘tape’ videos: Korg Stage Echo • Korg Stage Echo Tape Delay Maestro Echoplex EP-3 • Maestro Echoplex EP-3 In Depth El Capistan Sound on Sound mode: • Infinite LoFi Tape Loop El Capistan vs Belle Epoch • El Capistan vs Belle Epoch El Capistan on Piano • LOFI PIANO with STRYMON EL CAPISTAN El Capistan on Synth • MOOG MOTHER 32 + EL CAPISTAN El Capistan on Guitar • Strymon El Capistan El Capistan on Ring Mod • Moog FreqBox / Ring Mod / Strymon El Capistan
