Armed Suspect Opens Fire on LAPD — 90-Year-Old Man Killed in Shocking Standoff

On August 23rd, 2025, officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Southwest Division responded to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon at a residence in the 2300 block of West 23rd Street. When officers arrived, they found a 90-year-old victim down in front of the home — and moments later, the suspect, Andrew Smith, opened fire on police. After a prolonged standoff, LAPD SWAT deployed a tactical drone and located Smith barricaded inside the residence. He was taken into custody with multiple self-inflicted injuries and transported to the hospital. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives recovered multiple weapons, including a 9mm assault-style pistol and several knives. Smith was later charged with one count of murder, three counts of attempted murder on a peace officer, one count of felon in possession of a firearm, and one count of possession of an assault weapon.
