👨💻 Find out how to how to connect your mobile device to the Charles proxy desktop app, in order to retrieve network logs. 💡 The only application you will need is Charles proxy, you can find the latest version of Charles by accessing our Charles retrieving log tutorials or either by searching on Google. The method that we will be using requires a mobile device, a wi-fi connection and a desktop device which is connected to the same network as your phone or tablet through either cable or Wi-fi. Please note that in the following demonstration our Desktop device is connected to the internet through cable from a router while the Mobile phone is using Wi-fi. Having both devices on the same network is crucial in capturing the needed logs. ***Notice that upon fresh install of the Charles proxy app on your mobile device you will receive a notification in Charles to allow your device to capture the needed logs. Always make sure to select “allow” otherwise you will not have internet connection on your device and you will not be able to retrieve the logs. It is a tricky part since the Allow button is on the right side of the pop-up. After allowed, you are all set. 🔘 After the installation of Charles Proxy is complete simply open up the app. Make sure you immediately press the stop recording button since it will automatically start on launch. 🔘 Go to the proxy settings tab in order to see which proxy port you should be setting up when modifying the mobile device network. After setting a proxy port which should be a standard one of 8888, you will be needing to retrieve the IP hostname of your desktop device. In order to do that simply access the Command prompt from your desktop device and type in ipconfig and enter, now just search for the iPv4 address and there's your hostname. If your router runs on iPv6 then that is the address you should be adding in the following step. 💡 Now that we're finished with the Desktop setup it's time for the mobile one. Simply go to the Wi-fi connections and tap on the network that your desktop device is connected to. Tap on "Modify network" then “Show advanced options”, now go to proxy and select Manual. Now input the port you set earlier, in this case 8888 and also insert the hostname which is either your iPv4 or iPv6 address as discussed earlier, in this case ours will be the IPv4 address copied from the command prompt. Simply tap on Start recording and launch the app you are testing in order to reproduce the issue for which you need Charles logs. You can see that the logs are starting to generate once an action or command is initiated. After you're finished reproducing the issue or gathering the needed info, tap on the red dot then go to File, export session, give it a name and save it. **The same method can be used while using either an iOS device with a Mac or Android with Mac (the differences are minimal)**
