Belgian Malinois History Belgian Malinois hail from Belgium, as you would expect; however, you might not know, there are four Belgian Shepherd varieties, and each one is named after a village in Belgium. The four villages are Mechelar (Malinois), Tervuren, Laekenois, and Groenendael. Back when the Malinois came into existence in the late 1880s, the dog, along with German Shepherds, French and Dutch Shepherds, were all known as continental shepherd dogs. By 1891 fanciers of the dog had formed the Belgian Shepherd Club and the wise men of the club decided that Belgian Shepherds would be of square build, wide-set triangular ears, and of medium size. Their only difference would be the coat length, color, and texture. 1892 saw the creation of three types, rough-coated, short, and long-coated. The Belgian and Groenendael were the first two Belgian Shepherds to make their appearance in the United States. In 1959 the AKC (American Kennel Club) recognized three breeds the Malinois, Belgian Sheepdog, and the Tervuren. Belgian Malinois Temperament The Belgian Malinois is a fun-loving dog to have around; however, they are first and foremost working dogs. Initially bred as herding dogs, this instinct can spill over if you have young children, and a Mal can chase young children and scare them. Many people advise against this dog living in a home with very young children because of this issue. If you socialize and obedience train a Belgian Malinois from a very young age, they can make a wonderful pet for families with older children. The dog has a high prey drive and will probably not live comfortably with a cat, especially for the cat. These are high-energy dogs and need a good deal of vigorous exercise every day. So if your family life involves outdoor activity, such as jogging, biking, hiking, or anything similar, your Mal will fit in beautifully. Mals love to play games and excel at agility and other dog sports; there’s an excellent reason why these dogs are often chosen above all others for Police and security work. The Belgian Malinois will thrive in a home environment where they get masses of love and attention; they can, however, be wary of strangers, and often their protective nature kicks in a bit too soon. But early and continual socialization will help with this side of their personality. Belgian Mals are best suited to owners that have experience with large, powerful dogs because they are a handful to control and need firm but kind and consistent handling. That's not to say a novice owner cannot deal with the dog, but they cannot be a timid owner, or the dog will take advantage and become stubborn and disobedient. Belgian Malinois Health Belgian Malinois have some health issues you should be aware of, such as: ● Cataracts ● Elbow & Hip Dysplasia ● Thyroid Disease ● Epilepsy ● PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) Belgian Malinois Grooming Mals have short, flat double coats that shed heavily all year round. If you want to see less hair fall, then you'll have to brush your Mal two to three times each week; this will remove dead hairs before they fall on your furnishings; however, you might also need the help of a pet vacuum to pick up the amount of hair on your furnishings and in your carpets. Conclusion The Belgian Malinois makes a beautiful family pet in the right environment. They need an active family who enjoys an outdoor lifestyle. Exceptionally young children can be a bit of an issue, plus an experienced owner is advisable.
