Today on Houston Matters, we learn what Mayor John Whitmire had to say in his second State of the City address, which laid out his vision for the remainder of his term and promised not to increase taxes, despite the city’s budget issues. Houston Public Media reporter Dominic Anthony Walsh has the details. Also, Houston Public Media reporter Michael Adkison talks about the Houston Texans new headquarters for their business operations. It’s part of a planned 83-acre sports, retail, and entertainment district in the Bridgeland community in Cypress. Five years after the 2021 winter freeze knocked out power across the state for several days, we reflect on some memories of that deadly event and discuss the lessons learned from its effect on the power grid with energy industry veteran Beth Garza, Patricia Zavala from PowerHouse Texas, Dr. Samuel Prater from Memorial Hermann, and Denver Harbor resident Pedro Montemayor. Ahead of Valentine’s Day, we talk about a different kind of date, a “Doggy Date,” courtesy of the Houston Humane Society. Tyler Scott has the details. Then, we break down The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of the week with Jessica Brown, Marco Roberts, and Ernie Manouse. Topics this week include retired Houston Police Department sketch artist Lois Gibson released a sketch of the alleged suspect in the Nancy Guthrie case, based on the FBI-released images of a person in a ski mask believed to be at Guthrie’s front door, the new Cy-Fair ISD school board reinstated lessons on climate change, vaccinations, and more that were deemed controversial by the previous conservative school board, and today is Friday the 13th, the first of three Friday the 13ths this calendar year. It’s the first time in eleven years that we’ve seen three in one year, and most we can have in one year.
