Kypseli: Roaring Past and Rising Present, a talk by architect Angela Liarikos, creator of viral Instagram account athens___mon_amour The talk took place at Moon Station Athens as part of the Moon Station Athens salons curated by novelist Rana Haddad and artist and designer Olympia Zographos in Olympia Zographos' studio on the second floor of an art deco 1930s building in Athens' Commercial Triangle opposite the Old Parliament on Kolokotroni street. Moon Station Athens is a pop-up salon that brings together writers, artists and other creatives and arts and innovation-lovers living in Athens or passing through, we are self-funded and our ethos is to connect and build bridges not to divide. Each speaker is given full rein to express their vision without interference or censorship. We aim to have 4 to 5 events a year. So far our speakers have been: Journalist and film-maker Iason Athanasiadis, Historian Raphael Cormack, poet Ginger Zaimis, photographer John Stoddart and architect Angela Liarikos. Angela Liarikos is a Greek-Canadian architect based in Athens who lived and worked in Berlin and NYC previously. She started a photographic documentation project of Athens' neighbourhood of Kypseli (where she now lives) during her Covid lockdown walks (circa 2020) which she turned into an Instagram account celebrating the often-neglected beauty and architectural gems of Athens, particularly her own neighbourhood of Kypseli, once one of the most exclusive residential districts of Athens. Angela's documentation project chronicles the wealth of modernist styles that many buildings in the area possess, as well as long-lost craftsmanship and an extraordinary sense of aesthetics hard to match today, and she argues that these buildings and many of their historic interiors and even doors should be sensitively restored rather than renovated out of existence. Olympia Zographos's studio [Aka Moon Station Athens] is a project in which Olympia completely renovated three abandoned offices which had lost all period details using inspiration from the surrounding streets, as well as the art deco, interwar lineage of the building in order to bring back the aesthetics and mood of the that era and Kolokotroni Street which connects the Greek Parliament with Athinas Street, Psyrri and Monastiraki, areas full of traditional crafts shops, the flea market, the central food market of Athens and a variety of offices, with an added layer of imagination and fantasy.
