The Eldorado Brougham was first shown in 1956 as the dream car in the General Motors Motorama. The 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham is considered to be one of the most dramatically styled car of all time. It's overall height of 55.5 inches, the unique center door pillars, the smooth flow of the fender lines and the characteristic tall fins made this Cadillac a real head-turner. Only 400 of these hand-built, limited edition cars were built in 1957 and they were loaded with every conceivable luxury feature as standard equipment. the brushed stainless steel roof was the real standout item and was complimented by matching trim throughout the body design. Quad headlamps, memory seats, cruise control, automatic trunk opener, Autotronic Eye (headlight dimmer), power windows, forged aluminum wheels, transistorized radio, air conditioning, and a choice of 44 full leather trim combinations were also offered. The Brougham was powered by a 365 cubic inch V8 engine with 325 horsepower, and while its original price tag of $13,000 was high for its time, it set the new standard for American automotive style and luxury. The 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham model car kit by Atlantis is a long overdue reissue of the original Revell molds that were designed in 1957. Cadillac model car kits are not as numerous as other General Motors makes like Chevrolet, Camaro or Corvette, so any that pop up in limited run numbers are always welcome. The 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham model car kit came out at a time when the model kit industry was new and many of the early model cars had multi-piece bodies because the engineering to make a one-piece body design were not as of yet developed. Therefore, the body of the Eldorado is divided along the chrome side trim molding, resulting in a "Clam Shell" assembly consisting of the top fenders, hood, upper fins, upper door panels, and trunk lid with the lower body and under-pan molded as another single piece. The elaborate rocker panel trim and door "Teeth" are a separate piece that glues onto the body last. The roof is also a separate piece that glues onto the top of both the front and rear windows. What makes this design "complicated" is that the interior is designed to glue to the floor panel and then the upper part of the car glues down on top of that, trapping the interior into place. That means that if you want to spray paint the body of your 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham model car kit, you will either need to mask off the finished interior like you would with the cockpit of a model airplane kit or paint both body halves separately and hope that you don't ruin the paint when you glue the two body halves together. Another idea would be to cut the floor pan away from the lower body and then glue the lower body to the upper body to turn this into a one-piece body. Use some Evergreen Styrene strips on the inside of the car along the body separation lines for reinforcement, and some Evergreen small square tubing along the lower body sides where the chassis pan was located so you could re-attach the pan to the body using the square tubing as reinforcement and a stopper from the chassis pan falling through. The interior is nicely molded and is rather ahead of its time considering that all the pieces are molded separately like a modern model car kit. You get individual door panels, 2-piece front seat, rear seat, floor pan, 2-piece dashboard, steering column and steering wheel. The technique rivals something you would see in a Moebius model car or Tamyia or even the late 1990's Revell, Monogram and AMT model kits. Chrome on this model kit is limited to the front and rear bumpers, quad headlight, rear licence plate housing and the aluminum wheels. It would have been wonderful if Atlantis chrome plated the side body trim inserts so that the only chrome foil job on the body would have been the upper body spear, but they didn't go this route, leaving the model builder to use Bare Metal Foil or some kind of chrome paint. The glass is well done and has the trim molded to it, making it easy to chrome foil it without running the risk of breaking the think roof pillars. Side window wings glue onto the front window trim and the front glass has a small lip molded to it to support the roof. The final touch to this model kit are the inclusion of the two figures. these figures look historically accurate and remind me of old pictures of my parents when they were dating in the 1950's. I wish model companies would include figures with their kits again like Revell did on these early models. Currently, ICM from Ukraine is the only company doing this currently on their wonderful 1910 series car kits.
