This is a reupload of a supercut I did almost a year ago, but YT took it down after a month or two. I never got to re-editing it until now. Below is the description I posted at the time. Very little of that perspective has changed for me since then. 😹 Happy Season 4, everyone! I'll be back with more real soon. 🐈 --------------------- Feb 18, 2025 🐝 Risky Confession: Fan favorite Benedict Bridgerton is personally one of my least favorite characters. I literally chose him as my first vid subject as a penance/self-punishment for not clicking with him the way everyone else seemed to and an attempt to remedy some of my bias through exposure therapy. 🤣 It did work, a bit. 😂 They say the biggest predictor of affinity is proximity, and he and I have gotten much better acquainted spending all this time together lately. 💙 A lot of the things I played up in this video are not really what I think Ben's actual feelings are but more my commentary on the struggles within the family dynamic. I actually don't think Ben the character is in touch with his emotions enough to resent his family members as much as I sometimes imply here. 😅 I also am not saying this family or these people are "bad." Every person and family has dysfunction. I'm just reacting (and relating) to what makes them "them." 🎨 It's very interesting watching and analyzing this show from the sibling perspectives. Each can, of course, justifiably perceive themselves in a position of relative neglect to the other siblings, for reasons related to their own unique circumstances. For example, I could talk for hours about how I believe Colin is in many ways Violet's favorite child AND ALSO her most neglected. But from Ben's perspective, Colin is His Baby and his mom's baby and the all-around golden boy, while Anthony gets all the attention just by virtue of his position and the grief he's always causing. And Ben is just stuck there between the two, somehow even more "spare" than all the siblings who came after him, it seems, as he always exists in relation to Anthony, while the others are freer to have their own identities. I feel like all those contradictions are a part of being in a large (or any) family, as well as being in a family that has such a key traumatic event at its center. 🍼 Something I might get into in future videos is how much I view Ben as Violet Jr. Not only is he in some ways the child that looks most like her (freckle faces!) and has similar mannerisms, but my head canon is that, as Ant took on the role of Head of Household and Violet disappeared into grief, Ben took it upon himself to be a source of warmth and unconditional comfort for his younger siblings, and he used Violet as his model for that. 🤺 I think a lot of that plays into why he still hangs so close to the house now. I think he feels like his mother and The Littles still need him there, haunting the drawing room acting as a living security blanket. This theme is explored a little in Queen Charlotte with the Queen's offspring, and especially as that show does a bit of juxtaposing of Violet's grief and Queen Charlotte's, I think there's something to this. It contributes to his surface-level approach to so much of life and his almost scary easy-goingness, because he kind of is a visitor in life and has his own life on hold. Why do I feel like this man is going to BREAK before he's put back together next season? The fact that he is never anything but just pleasant to everyone else just makes me so nervous waiting for the other shoe to drop. 😅 🎭 What perhaps irks me the most on Ben's behalf is how he seems to exist as His Brother's Keeper. The show literally introduces us to him as if he's the oldest kid, in the first scene of the family getting ready for Daphne's debut (And he is immediately undermined and made the butt of a joke, as the first thing we learn about Colin is he's preferred over Ben ). Then the next scene introduces Violet... Her first line is hounding Ben about where his brother is, and it is implied that this is an established pattern with the three of them. Anthony blows off his duties and Violet sends Ben after him, or at the very least, complains to Ben about it. If some of the kids got a bit "parentified" because of Edmund's death, Ben also got a little bit "husbandified," it seems. And don't get me started on the way Ant treats Ben when it comes to the viscountcy. 💃🕺 I look forward to seeing what Season 4 has in store for us and Benedict, who has been largely underserved so far. Of course, is that a bug or a feature of the story, since that is what happens in his own life, as well? This show is so "meta" that I know it's at least partially intentional, but I am just waiting to be able to connect to him more once we finally get to see his depths. 🩶 I hope you enjoy this one, and if you have thoughts on a character or theme you'd like to see next, I'd love to hear about it! xoxo, Messy Cressy 💅
