Roy Scott of Vintage Axe Works shows how to use the rotary platen on his KMG-TX belt grinder to impart a convex edge grind for sharp steel axe heads. Roy shows why he likes Beaumont Metal Works' rotary platen to produce consistent, clean, convex cutting edges. He also demonstrates many ways the rotary platen can be adjusted for custom usage on almost any 2x72 belt grinder or belt sander, and how he sets up and uses it on his KMG-TX belt grinder. This video shows how fast and easy Roy cuts in a super clean grind line and an extremely sharp cutting edge. Roy uses 80 grit ceramic abrasive and 320 grit abrasive belts, as well as a synthetic strop with the rotary platen on his KMG in this video, and does some paper shredding to show what he means by razor sharp. The rotary platen has four major advantages for producing convex shapes and edges. First, the rotary platen's dedicated industrial belt provides heavy duty, flexible support behind the abrasive belt for consistent and confident pressure application. Second, the four wheels of the rotary platen are spaced uniquely to provide different degrees of slack on each of the main operating surfaces. Third, the operator can revolve the rotary platen a full 360 degrees in its tool arm to select not only the primary slack distance between rollers but also the exact angle for optimal convex grinding of a cutting edge. Fourth, the rotary platen has an adjustable idler wheel which enables the operator to increase or decrease the amount of tension and thus the amount of give in its industrial backing belt. The rotary platen from Beaumont Metal Works perfectly with Beaumont's classic KMG and KMG-TX belt grinders, and also other belt grinders which run 2" x 72" abrasive belts.
