(8 Sep 1998) T/I: 10:28:13 Cambodian anti-government demonstrators gathered in Phnom Penh Tuesday (8/9) in defiance of an order to disperse, undeterred by tough police action, which left at least one protester dead. Hundreds of Buddhist monks clad in orange robes staged a vigil at the site of the protester's death. Security forces loyal to ruling strongman Hun Sen kept clear of Phnom Penh's so-called "democracy square" -- site of a two week sit-in -- even though protesters ignored a deadline to disperse at midnight. By morning thousands of supporters of Prince Norodom Ranariddh's FUNCINPEC party and the Sam Rainsy party were once again rallying in the square outside the national assembly to protest against alleged fraud in the July 26 election won by Hun Sen's Cambodian People's Party (CPP).
