Nalo Hopkinson was characteristically generous in responding to our highly unreasonable request to discuss a novel she wrote a lifetime ago. Ever the revolutionary, she responded to our interrogation of the novel's exploration of spirituality, revolution, sexuality and sex work without demur. Ever the grateful recipient of the bounty of other writers and scholars, she heaped praise on Bruce Sterling for sending her a collection of Baudelaire's private letters in translation, Samuel R. Delany for being her creative North Star, Patrick Barnard for translating, at her request, Baudelaire's Le Serpent Qui Danse in a manner that captures its nuances, and James Morrow for mentoring her through the process of creating her MFA thesis which we now know as The Salt Roads.
