The glass pyramid has been erected in the factory’s inner courtyard to mark the company‘s 250th anniversary. It is intended as a symbol of eternity and a reminder to always look upwards, striving to reach the summit. It was built in 2006 by Georg J. Riedel, representing the 10th generation of the family. In 2021, Riedel will be celebrating yet another anniversary – 265 years of the Austrian glass manufacturer who, in the last 60 years, has risen to become the world market leader for functional wine glassware. Maximilian J. Riedel, representing the 11th generation of the family and head of the family-owned company, had a bell cast to mark this special anniversary and as a personal gift to his family with a symbolic character. Maximilian therefore designed the bell himself. It bears the family motto – Stoke embers, don‘t tend ashes. “This motto has been true for many generations of my family and will continue to drive us in the future to always look forward and never to be simply happy with what we have achieved”, explains Maximilian Riedel. At its heart are the initials of the three last Riedel generations, the generations who, after the new start in Kufstein, shaped the Riedel philosophy – Claus J. Riedel (9th generation), the inventor and developer of the wine-friendly wine glass which created the basis for what Riedel stands for today: the functional wine glass attuned to the type of grape. Georg J. Riedel (10th generation) who, through his passion for wine, his tremendous knowledge of the interaction between form and function and his business acumen, built Riedel up into a global brand, and finally Maximilian J. Riedel himself, who has managed the company since 2013 with skill and tremendous international success. “The bell also pays homage to a symbol that is very important to me personally”, says Maximilian J. Riedel, explaining his decision to choose a bell. On September 1, 1779, Johann Leopold Riedel, the forefather of the Riedel company history, installed a bell in Christiansthal (formerly Bohemia, now Czechia) with the wish that it would be given a home in its own church. This wish was granted one year later. From September 1780, the bell hung in a church built by Johann Leopold Riedel and was later smelted down. Says Maximilian Riedel: “Bells have a 5000-year history and have long been used to bring rhythm to our day – time to pause, and even time for new beginnings. I find this to be a wonderful symbol. My predecessors clearly saw it the same way. History repeats itself ...” The bell was produced by the Grassmayr bell foundry in Innsbruck. It is a family-owned company that has been producing bells for 400 years. The bell will hang in a bell tower built especially for it in the factory‘s inner courtyard. It will ring at midday each day.
