The Zoppas 147 Superline of the 1970 is the last washing machine made and designed by Zoppas before being acquired by the Zanussi company and it is the first Zoppas having the BIOLOGICAL program cycle. In the late 60es new detergents using enzymes instead of aggressive chemical agents were developed, enzymes act on the dirt degrading its structure and each enzyme acts on a single substance; for instance the PROTEASE enzyme acts on proteins so that if a table cloth got stained by the typical Italian ragù sauce, which is 70% proteins, the PROTEASE enzyme will act on that degrading it so that the soap in the detergent will remove it easily. There are many enzymes and those normally added to detergents formula are: PROTEASE, already mentioned, AMYLASE which degrades food starch (cornstarch, rice starch, wheat starch…), CELLULASE which literally “eats away” the loosen fibers detaching from the fabric surface responsible for the “white shadow” on dark colored fabrics (the enzyme CELLULASE is not present in detergents for WOOL, SILK and natural delicate fabrics because the CELLULASE enzyme would cause damage it). The enzymes mentioned are now present in almost any detergent since the late 60es but others had been patented… the very best BIO detergents now have up to five enzymes including: the three already mentioned plus the GLYCOSIDASE which degrades sugars, the LYPASE which degrades fats and oils and the latest patented, the MANNANASE, which is a super enzyme (the one behind the super power in removing stains from fabrics of a very famous wash aid powder) that degrades any sort of emulsion (chocolate, cream, lipsticks, any kind of body lotion, etc…). Enzymes to be put into practical work need a special wash cycle, first of all it must be said that each enzyme does its best at a peculiar temperature and it takes a certain time to perform its task so it was decided to standardize the Bio cycle to an average temperature that could put all of them in the condition of giving their best even if not 100% and the perfect temperature turned out to be 55°C (130°F), once the wash temperature had been chosen an average soaking time has to be chosen depending on the dirt to be removed and can vary from 30 minutes to 12 hours. After the enzymes had performed their task an ordinary non aggressive soap based detergent was used to remove the loosened dirt and complete the cleaning process so it was decided to split the standardized BIO cycle into two separate parts in which two different detergents were supposed to be used: first a BIOLOGICAL prewash at 55°C (130°F) with the enzyme charged detergent was done, then the enzyme solution was drained and a second ordinary wash from cold to 95°C (158°F) depending on the load type, with a soap based non aggressive detergent was performed to complete the cleaning process, the following rinsing and spin drying part of the cycle were exactly the same as in any normal wash cycles. At the time few machines on the market have such a wash cycle, when a prewash was set this was in cold or lukewarm water and lasted for no more then 10 to 30 minutes because its task was mostly to remove dust and sand, and in general lose dirt particles from the fabrics to prevent them weakening the power of the detergent in the following main wash, so a new generation of washing machines were designed. The BIO detergents were available in separate packaging or in a double box combination in which there were two different wash powders with different coloring not to be confused, one was to be use in the BIO prewash and the second in the following short finishing wash operation. In Italy the most common BIO detergents were BIO-PRESTO, ONDAVIVA and BIOL. Mechanically this new model is for the most the same as the previous Zoppas washing machines but it was the first having the controls on the front, a new motor able to make the machine spin dry faster (550 rpm) and, of course, a new timer having the Bio cycle program were mounted. It’s a very good machine very heavy, still made with 8/10mm galvanized steel and porcelain enameled wash tub, the machine in the video was for the export version for the Switzerland market and can be powered either with single phase or three phase current. It’s very reliable and its washing performance is the best one can expect from a washing machine.
